1. Both of you must personally file the marriage declaration with the civil-status service and confirm that there are no legal impediments to the marriage.

2. Prepare all civil-status documents, divorce judgments or death certificates, and any additional declarations required for each person’s situation.

When?

Before filing the declaration, so the documents are valid when they are used.

Where / who?

Civil-status service; for foreign documents, the issuing authority, translator and relevant legalisation authority.

What to prepare?

Originals, authorised translations and proof that any previous marriage was dissolved or ended.

What to check?

The list differs for foreign citizens, divorced persons and other special situations.

3. Obtain the prenuptial medical certificates in the required form and within their required period of validity.

When?

Shortly before the declaration/ceremony, in line with the statutory validity period.

Where / who?

Authorised medical provider; submit the certificates to the civil-status service.

What to prepare?

Identity documents and any examinations required by the provider.

What to check?

A certificate that has expired by the ceremony date may require the ceremony to be rescheduled or the document to be obtained again.

4. Confirm the date, witnesses, surname arrangements after marriage and any local attendance requirements.

When?

When filing the declaration and before the ceremony.

Where / who?

The civil-status service chosen within the rules on territorial jurisdiction.

What to prepare?

The future spouses’ and witnesses’ documents and the chosen surname arrangement.

What to check?

The marriage cannot be concluded if personal consent or valid documents are missing.

5. Collect the marriage certificate and, if your surname or other relevant status changes, apply for new documents and update your employer, banks and your own contracts.

When?

After the marriage, within the deadlines that apply to each document.

Marriage certificate, old documents and contract numbers.

What to check?
