My child was born – what do I need to do?
3 tasks in suggested order
1. Register the child's birth with the competent civil-status authority.
Within 30 days of birth for a child born alive and still living. For a stillborn child, the deadline is 3 days; if a child born alive dies within 30 days, the birth must be declared within 24 hours of death.
The declaration may be submitted to the civil-status office of any S.P.C.L.E.P. or any town hall; the registration itself is completed by the office/town hall in whose area the birth occurred.
The medical certificate confirming the birth, the mother’s identity document and, where applicable, the declarant’s identity document, plus the marriage certificate or other declarations required for the family situation.
If the legal deadline has passed, the late-registration procedure applies; after more than 1 year, the additional approvals required by law are needed.

2. If the parents are not married and the father acknowledges the child, submit the acknowledgement declaration and the required consent.
When registering the birth or according to the civil-status procedure.
The competent civil-status officer.
The father’s acknowledgement declaration and, for the child’s surname, the mother’s consent required by the procedure, together with the identity documents.
This applies only to a child born outside marriage in the relevant situation.

3. Collect the birth certificate issued after verification and preparation of the birth record.
After the birth has been registered.

Documents/confirmations required to complete the procedure.
The certificate is the result of a separate civil-status procedure and will be needed for other formalities.
