1. Make sure the death is medically certified and registered with the civil-status service, then obtain the death certificate.

When?

Immediately after the death and within the applicable reporting deadline.

Where / who?

Doctor/healthcare facility and the civil-status service responsible for the place of death.

What to prepare?

Medical certificate confirming the death, the deceased person’s documents and the declarant’s documents.

What to check?

If the death occurs outside a healthcare facility, first contact a doctor or the emergency services and do not alter the place before the death is certified.

2. Choose a funeral provider, arrange burial or cremation, and keep the contracts and invoices.

When?

After the documents required for transport and burial have been issued.

Where / who?

Funeral provider and cemetery/crematorium administration.

What to prepare?

Death certificate/document, the applicant’s identity document and any documents requested by the provider.

What to check?

The funeral provider is a private contractual provider; check the services and costs before signing.

3. Check entitlement to the death grant and any other rights linked to the deceased person’s status, and submit the claim with proof of expenses where required.

When?

After the death, within the deadline for the relevant entitlement.

Where / who?

Pension house, employer or other competent paying body.

What to prepare?

Death certificate, invoices, proof of your capacity/relationship and the application.

What to check?

Conditions and amounts can change; do not confuse the death grant with a survivor’s pension.

4. Secure the home and belongings, notify banks, the employer, insurers and service providers, and find out what can be suspended until the inheritance is settled.

When?

Without undue delay, but check your authority to act before disposing of any assets.

Where / who?

The specific institutions and providers used by the deceased person.

What to prepare?

Death certificate, account/contract numbers and proof of authority to represent the estate, if required.

What to check?

A relative does not automatically have the right to use all of the deceased person’s accounts and contracts.

5. Contact the competent notary and prepare a list of heirs, assets, debts and any will for the inheritance procedure.

When?

After obtaining the death certificate and the basic documents.

Where / who?

The notary competent according to the deceased person’s last domicile.

What to prepare?

Civil-status documents, will, ownership documents, accounts, vehicles and debts.

What to check?

Do not dispose of assets or acknowledge debts before your status as an heir has been clarified.

6. If the spouse, children or other survivors meet the conditions, submit an application for a survivor’s pension.

When?

After the death, once you have the required documents; this is separate from the inheritance procedure.

Where / who?

The competent territorial pension house.

What to prepare?

Death and family-relationship certificates, identity documents and the required insurance/study documents.

What to check?

A survivor’s pension is not an inheritance and has its own eligibility conditions for each beneficiary.
