1. Obtain the termination decision, certificates of contribution period and income, employment-record extract/report and settlement of salary entitlements.

When?

When the employment contract ends or immediately afterwards.

Where / who?

Former employer/HR.

What to prepare?

Contract details, payment account and personal documents.

What to check?

Check the legal basis and date of termination; they may affect unemployment benefit and any challenge to the termination.

2. Register as a jobseeker with the territorial employment agency if you want services, job-matching support and potentially unemployment benefit.

When?

As soon as possible after employment ends to preserve continuity of relevant rights.

Where / who?

The AJOFM for your county or AMOFM Bucharest responsible for your domicile/residence.

What to prepare?

Identity documents, education/qualification documents, employment documents and certificates.

What to check?

Registration does not happen automatically when the employer reports the end of employment.

3. Apply for unemployment benefit if you meet the contribution-period and other conditions, and complete the file if requested.

When?

Within the period that determines the date from which the entitlement is granted.

Where / who?

The competent AJOFM/AMOFM.

What to prepare?

Application, contribution-period and income documents, proof of termination and the required declarations.

What to check?

Jobseeker/unemployed status and entitlement to unemployment benefit are separate decisions.

4. Confirm the date from which you are insured through unemployment, family status, another contract or your own contribution, and avoid a gap in coverage.

When?

When the employment contract ends and after the unemployment decision.

Where / who?

Health-insurance fund, AJOFM and, where relevant, ANAF.

What to prepare?

Termination decision, proof of registration and the new basis for coverage.

What to check?

Submitting an application that has not yet been approved does not by itself prove insured status.

5. If household income has fallen, separately check eligibility for minimum-income support, housing/heating support and any other applicable benefits.

When?

After the income reduction, within the application periods for each programme.

Where / who?

Town hall/social service, AJPIS and the specific paying body.

What to prepare?

Household income and composition, housing details and relevant bills.

What to check?

There is no single automatic package of benefits after losing a job.

6. Check your contribution record and keep employment documents, especially for older periods or periods worked abroad.

When?

After employment ends and before a future pension application.

Where / who?

Territorial pension house and the foreign institution, if applicable.

What to prepare?

Employment books/certificates, contracts, payroll records and forms covering foreign periods.

What to check?

ANOFM does not automatically correct every period in the pension records.
