Moving back to Hungary from abroad on a permanent basis
6 tasks in suggested order
1. Register your Hungarian place of residence or stay and request an updated address card if your details have changed due to your previous settlement abroad.
After actually moving back and acquiring the right to use the dwelling.

Personal identification documents and a document entitling you to use the dwelling or a consent form from the accommodation provider.
Returning home does not automatically restore a previously cancelled Hungarian address registration.

2. Report the termination of your foreign insurance coverage and clarify the basis on which you will again be entitled to Hungarian healthcare services.
Without delay after the termination of foreign insurance and the establishment of eligibility under Hungarian law.
Competent health insurance authority/NEAK, employer, or NAV (National Tax and Customs Administration), depending on the basis of eligibility.
Proof of termination of foreign insurance, Social Security ID (TAJ) card, address details, and documentation regarding Hungarian employment or other basis of eligibility.
Possession of a social security number (TAJ number) does not in itself prove current eligibility.

3. Examine tax residency for the year of return and the treatment of foreign income in the Hungarian tax return.
Upon return and prior to the annual tax filing.

Residency details; foreign and Hungarian income and tax certificates.
Having a registered address does not in itself resolve the issue of double taxation and tax residency.

4. If unemployed, decide on registering as a jobseeker and obtaining proof of foreign insurance periods.
As soon as possible after returning and the termination of foreign employment.

Jobseeker registration and eligibility for benefits are separate decisions.

5. Enroll returning children in kindergarten or school, and request recognition of foreign studies or grade placement.
Before the start of the school year or immediately after returning.
Assigned or chosen school, school district center, and—if necessary—the educational authority.
Child’s documents, proof of address, and foreign certificates with translations.
Foreign grade levels cannot always be automatically equated to the Hungarian system.

6. If bringing a foreign vehicle home, arrange for compliance, taxes, insurance, and Hungarian registration.
Before long-term road use in Hungary.
Transport authority/testing station, Tax Authority (NAV), insurance company, and Government Window.
Proof of ownership, foreign documents, technical specifications, and tax/insurance certificates.
Relocating to Hungary and domesticating the vehicle are separate procedures.
