I am moving abroad from Hungary for the long term.

4 tasks in suggested order

1. If you move abroad permanently, report your settlement abroad so the register can record you as a Hungarian citizen living abroad and you can receive a new address card marked 'Residence: foreign address'.

When?

In connection with permanent settlement abroad; in Hungary this can be handled at a Government Window (Kormányablak) or district office, or abroad through a Hungarian consulate.

Where / who?

Government Window/district office, consulate, or supported electronic channel. (official Hungarian name: Kormányablak, járási hivatal)

What to prepare?

Personal identification documents, address card, and details of the foreign address, if available.

What to check?

A temporary stay abroad is not always equivalent to declaring foreign residency.

2. If you become insured abroad, report the start of the foreign insurance to the competent government office within 15 days; this is used to update the status of your Hungarian Social Security ID (TAJ) for use in Hungary.

When?

Within 15 days of the start of the foreign insurance.

Where / who?

The health insurance authority competent for your place of residence and the foreign institution.

What to prepare?

Proof of foreign employment/insurance, Hungarian social security number (TAJ), and personal details.

What to check?

A foreign address does not in itself determine insurance jurisdiction; the payment of duplicate contributions must be avoided.

3. For the year you move abroad, check your tax residence and how foreign income is treated for Hungarian tax purposes. This may be determined jointly by Hungarian rules, the rules of the other country and the applicable double-taxation treaty.

When?

When moving abroad and before preparing the tax return for the relevant tax year.

Where / who?

NAV; a tax advisor in complex situations involving two countries.

What to prepare?

Data regarding Hungarian and foreign income, days of residence, and family and economic ties.

What to check?

Updating your registered address does not automatically change your tax residency status in every case.

4. If you receive Hungarian jobseeker benefits and want to look for work in another EEA country, request the U2 document before departure. As a general rule, you must first have remained available to the Hungarian employment service for at least 4 weeks and then register in the destination country within 7 days; the benefit can usually be exported for up to 3 months and, subject to conditions, for up to 6 months.

When?

Request the U2 document before departure and register in the destination country within 7 days.

Where / who?

The employment department of the district government office or the agency paying the specific benefit. (official Hungarian name: foglalkoztatási osztály)

What to prepare?

Details of the benefit, date of departure, destination country, and foreign contact details.

What to check?

Conditions for paying benefits abroad vary; failure to report changes may result in payments being made without legal entitlement.
