I am renting an apartment – what needs to be arranged?
6 tasks in suggested order
1. Make the residential lease in writing. Before signing, review in particular the rent, charges, duration, deposit and termination terms.

2. At handover, prepare a handover record, note the meter readings and keys, and photograph the condition of the property.
When taking over the property and again when returning it.
With the landlord at the property.

3. Agree with the landlord which utilities remain in the landlord's name and which the tenant must transfer or contract for separately.
Before moving in or shortly afterwards.

4. If you wish to register the apartment as your place of residence or stay, fulfill the requirements for address registration.
Within the applicable deadline after moving in.
Government Window (Kormányablak) / District Office or a supported electronic service. (official Hungarian name: járási hivatal)
Personal identification documents and proof of the right to use the apartment or the landlord's consent.
A lease agreement does not always automatically update your registered address.

5. Consider whether you need contents or liability insurance and ask what the owner's existing insurance covers.
When moving in or during the tenancy.
With an insurer of your choice.
Basic details of the property and the assets you want to insure.
This is a voluntary financial decision, not a statutory or official requirement.
6. End the tenancy in accordance with the contract and the applicable tenancy rules; check the required form and notice period.
When you want to end the tenancy.
With the landlord.
Lease agreement and any notice or declaration required to terminate it.
The exact termination rules depend on the type and terms of the contract; do not apply one general notice period to every tenancy.
