I have moved – what do I need to do now?

1. Register the new residence and deregister the old one

After moving, register the new residence. The old residence can normally be deregistered at the same time.

When?

Generally register within 3 days of moving in. A standalone deregistration can be done within 3 days before or after moving out.

Where / who?

Registration authority: municipal office or magistrate; in Vienna the competent district office. Online registration may be available.

What to prepare?

Registration form signed by the accommodation provider plus the identity/civil-status documents required by the official service.

What to check?

Children under 18 moving with you must also be registered. Late registration can result in a fine.

2. If leaving a rented home, check the notice period and end the tenancy in time.

3. Transfer or end your electricity, gas and heating contracts; provide the moving date and billing address.

4. For your phone/internet contracts, arrange transfer or cancellation with the provider; check minimum terms and notice periods.

5. Read and record meter readings when moving out and moving in.

6. Arrange the property handover and record its condition, keys and outstanding issues in the handover record.

7. When a tenancy ends, request the final account and adjust standing orders to any outstanding payments.

8. If you have home contents insurance, report the move beforehand and agree continued cover.

9. If children move with you, arrange childcare and school transfer with the current and new institutions.

10. Update contact and correspondence addresses for your bank accounts, loans and insurance policies.

11. Update your address with doctors, subscriptions, clubs and transport providers whose services you use.

12. If you pay the ORF contribution, report the move to the ORF contribution service and clarify future liability.

13. If receiving social benefits or a study grant, report the move to the paying body and clarify continued eligibility.

14. If you have a dog, arrange deregistration and registration with the relevant municipalities.

15. Tell your employer your new address

If you are employed, notify your employer of the new home address.

When?

Most employment contracts require prompt notification of changed personal data. If claiming the commuter allowance, notify the change of residence within one month.

Where / who?

Employer or HR department.

What to prepare?

New address and, if needed, personnel number or other details requested by the employer.

What to check?

For an active employment relationship, the employer reports changes to the relevant health insurance body.

16. Tell AMS your new address

If applicable: Only if you are registered with AMS or receive unemployment-insurance benefits.

If you receive unemployment-insurance benefits, you must report the new address to AMS.

When?

Immediately, no later than within one week.

Where / who?

Via MeinAMS, by phone, in writing or in person at your previously responsible AMS office.

What to prepare?

New address and your AMS/insurance details.

What to check?

For a phone notification, the official portal recommends noting the name of the person handling the call.

17. Check whether you also need to notify the tax office

If applicable: Check whether an additional update is needed, especially for a separate correspondence address, certain allowances or self-employment.

The main residence is generally transferred from the Central Register of Residents to the tax administration. In some cases an additional update is advisable or required.

When?

If you receive Family Allowance and do not use FinanzOnline, report the move promptly. Self-employed people must report an address change within one month if it has not already been transferred via the residents register.

Where / who?

FinanzOnline or the Austrian tax office.

What to prepare?

New address, tax number or FinanzOnline access; if applicable, details of a different correspondence address.

What to check?

Only the main residence is automatically transferred from the residents register. Check any separate correspondence address.

18. If self-employed, notify your health insurer of the new address; if employed or receiving AMS benefits, check reporting via your employer or AMS.

19. Consider a mail forwarding order

If not already done, the official moving guidance recommends arranging mail forwarding.

When?

Around the move or as soon as possible afterwards.

Where / who?

Austrian Post.

What to prepare?

Old and new address plus any identity/account details requested by the postal service.

What to check?

Mail forwarding does not replace directly updating your address with authorities, banks, insurers or service providers.

20. Check vehicle registration after the move

If applicable: Only if you have a vehicle; whether an update is actually required depends on the new registration authority.

Whether you need to change vehicle registration depends on whether the competent authority or plate authority code changes.

When?

Changes affecting entries in the registration certificate generally have to be reported within one week. If the authority and plate authority code remain the same, a separate vehicle update may not be needed.

Where / who?

Authorised registration office; if the plate changes, ASFINAG may also need to be contacted for a digital vignette.

What to prepare?

Registration certificate and the vehicle, insurance and identity documents listed for the specific procedure.

What to check?

If a new number plate is issued, a digital vignette may need to be re-registered.
