1. Before moving, clarify entry, residence and work requirements for the destination country.

If you leave Austria and give up your residence here, you must deregister it with the registration authority.
Within 3 days before or up to 3 days after moving or giving up the residence.
Registration authority at the previous place of residence: municipal office, Magistrat or, in Vienna, the Municipal District Office; also online if the requirements of the digital public service are met.

3. If leaving a rented home, check the notice period and end the tenancy in time.

4. Transfer or end your electricity, gas and heating contracts; provide the moving date and billing address.

5. For your phone/internet contracts, arrange transfer or cancellation with the provider; check minimum terms and notice periods.

6. Read and record meter readings when moving out and moving in.

7. Arrange the property handover and record its condition, keys and outstanding issues in the handover record.

8. When a tenancy ends, request the final account and adjust standing orders to any outstanding payments.

9. If you have home contents insurance, report the move beforehand and agree continued cover.

10. If children move with you, arrange childcare and school transfer with the current and new institutions.

11. Update contact and correspondence addresses for your bank accounts, loans and insurance policies.

12. Update your address with doctors, subscriptions, clubs and transport providers whose services you use.

13. If you pay the ORF contribution, report the move to the ORF contribution service and clarify future liability.

14. If receiving social benefits or a study grant, report the move to the paying body and clarify continued eligibility.

15. If you have a dog, arrange deregistration and registration with the relevant municipalities.

16. Before departure, ask your health insurer which cover ends or continues and what evidence is needed.

17. If registered with AMS, report departure beforehand and clarify whether benefits can continue abroad.

18. Tell your employer your new address
If you are employed, notify your employer of the new home address.
Most employment contracts require prompt notification of changed personal data. If claiming the commuter allowance, notify the change of residence within one month.

For an active employment relationship, the employer reports changes to the relevant health insurance body.

19. Check your overseas and correspondence addresses with the tax office and have them corrected if needed.

20. If receiving a pension, arrange the overseas address and continued payment with your pension provider.

21. If taking a car abroad, coordinate deregistration, destination-country registration and insurance with the relevant bodies.
