Update address after moving

5 tasks in suggested order

1. Tell your employer your new address

If you are employed, notify your employer of the new home address.

When?

Most employment contracts require prompt notification of changed personal data. If claiming the commuter allowance, notify the change of residence within one month.

Where / who?

Employer or HR department.

What to prepare?

New address and, if needed, personnel number or other details requested by the employer.

What to check?

For an active employment relationship, the employer reports changes to the relevant health insurance body.

2. Tell AMS your new address

If applicable: Only if you are registered with AMS or receive unemployment-insurance benefits.

If you receive unemployment-insurance benefits, you must report the new address to AMS.

When?

Immediately, no later than within one week.

Where / who?

Via MeinAMS, by phone, in writing or in person at your previously responsible AMS office.

What to prepare?

New address and your AMS/insurance details.

What to check?

For a phone notification, the official portal recommends noting the name of the person handling the call.

3. Check whether you also need to notify the tax office

If applicable: Check whether an additional update is needed, especially for a separate correspondence address, certain allowances or self-employment.

The main residence is generally transferred from the Central Register of Residents to the tax administration. In some cases an additional update is advisable or required.

When?

If you receive Family Allowance and do not use FinanzOnline, report the move promptly. Self-employed people must report an address change within one month if it has not already been transferred via the residents register.

Where / who?

FinanzOnline or the Austrian tax office.

What to prepare?

New address, tax number or FinanzOnline access; if applicable, details of a different correspondence address.

What to check?

Only the main residence is automatically transferred from the residents register. Check any separate correspondence address.

4. Update insurers, bank, school and other important organisations

The official after-moving checklist includes insurers, banks, broadcasting contribution service, education providers, doctors, transport providers and other organisations whose address records may need updating.

When?

There is no single statutory deadline for this private/contractual group on the overview page; check and update them promptly after moving.

Where / who?

Directly with the relevant provider or organisation, depending on your situation.

What to prepare?

New address, customer/insurance numbers and, if needed, proof of registration.

What to check?

Not every organisation receives your new address automatically. Review your own contracts and memberships individually.

5. Check vehicle registration after the move

If applicable: Only if you have a vehicle; whether an update is actually required depends on the new registration authority.

Whether you need to change vehicle registration depends on whether the competent authority or plate authority code changes.

When?

Changes affecting entries in the registration certificate generally have to be reported within one week. If the authority and plate authority code remain the same, a separate vehicle update may not be needed.

Where / who?

Authorised registration office; if the plate changes, ASFINAG may also need to be contacted for a digital vignette.

What to prepare?

Registration certificate and the vehicle, insurance and identity documents listed for the specific procedure.

What to check?

If a new number plate is issued, a digital vignette may need to be re-registered.
