1. Check and apply for a leave of absence from the university/higher education institution
A leave of absence is provided for certain documented reasons – for example military/civilian service, pregnancy, caring responsibilities, an illness that prevents study, or a voluntary social year. Further reasons and details may be set out in the university's statutes.
According to the deadlines and procedural rules of your university/higher education institution; these can differ by type of institution and its statutes.
At your university/higher education institution.
Application and evidence of the specific reason for the leave of absence, as required by the institution.
A leave of absence is not the same as permanently discontinuing your studies. Check under your institution's rules which study activities are permitted during the leave.

2. Inform the Study Grant Authority about an interruption or leave of absence
If applicable: Only if you receive a study grant.
If you receive a study grant, you must report any circumstance that can suspend, reduce or terminate your entitlement. An interruption of studies and a leave of absence are expressly listed as reportable circumstances.
Within 2 weeks of becoming aware of the relevant change.
Study Grant Authority or the competent scholarship office.
Grant details and information/evidence concerning the interruption or leave of absence.
A late or omitted notification can result in loss of entitlement or repayment claims.

3. Check health insurance during a study break
If applicable: Especially relevant if you rely on student self-insurance or have no other coverage.
If your health insurance cover depends on student status, check before the break whether the requirements continue to be met or whether another form of insurance will be needed.
As soon as the leave of absence or interruption is confirmed.
With the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) if you have student self-insurance; otherwise with the health insurance institution responsible for you.
Insurance number plus proof of studies and the leave of absence.
The reduced-rate student self-insurance has its own requirements. If they are not met and no other insurance cover exists, general voluntary self-insurance may be an option; an application is required for this.
