I am moving abroad from Slovakia permanently.

4 tasks in suggested order

1. First distinguish a permanent move from Slovakia from a temporary stay abroad.

When?

Before departure.

Where / who?

If needed, the residence registry office; the exact procedure is on slovensko.sk.

What to prepare?

Planned duration abroad and whether you intend to end permanent residence in Slovakia.

What to check?

A temporary move does not automatically end permanent residence.

2. If you are moving permanently, report the end of permanent residence and deal with your identity card.

When?

Before departure or, under the official procedure, also after leaving.

Where / who?

Residence registry office or electronic service; after departure a Slovak embassy/consulate may assist.

What to prepare?

Identity document, deregistration form and foreign-residence details required for the chosen filing method.

What to check?

On permanent departure, the Slovak ID card showing a Slovak address is surrendered; an ID card showing residence abroad may be requested.

3. Health and social insurance when moving abroad

When?

Before leaving, or as soon as insurance coverage starts in another country.

Where / who?

Your health insurer, the Social Insurance Agency and, where relevant, the competent institution in the new country.

What to prepare?

Documents showing employment, self-employment and insurance in the new country.

What to check?

Within the EU/EEA and Switzerland, the competent country for social security must first be determined. Before deregistering from the Slovak system, confirm which country’s rules apply to you.

4. Before leaving, review tax residence, contracts and any continuing Slovak duties linked to a vehicle or property.

When?

Before departure and again before the first tax return after the move.

Where / who?

Financial Administration, municipality, service providers and other relevant institutions.

What to prepare?

Overview of income, property, contracts and ties to both countries.

What to check?

Permanent residence and tax residence are not the same; a double-tax treaty may matter when two countries are involved.
