Starting university studies

5 tasks in suggested order

1. Complete the admissions process, submit original copies of required documents, and finalize enrollment/matriculation by the university's deadline.

When?

By the deadline specified in the decision and the university's schedule.

Where / who?

The admissions system and the dean's office of the specific university.

What to prepare?

School-leaving certificate/diploma, ID document, photograph, and other documents specific to the field of study.

What to check?

Qualifying for admission does not always automatically confer student status without formal enrollment.

2. Check who registers you for health insurance. If you have your own insurance basis, its payer registers you; if you do not, first check whether you can be registered as a family member and, if not, through your university.

When?

After starting your studies and after every change in work, age, or family situation. A student under 26 without their own insurance basis should first be registered as a family member if they meet the conditions.

Where / who?

Family member (as payer), employer, university, or ZUS/NFZ (Social Insurance Institution/National Health Fund).

What to prepare?

Certificate of enrollment and a document confirming the absence of another degree.

What to check?

Student status does not automatically mean the university registers every individual.

3. Check the requirements for the need-based grant, the Rector’s scholarship, the scholarship for students with disabilities, or the one-off financial aid payment, and submit the appropriate application.

When?

Within the deadlines set by the university, or—in the case of one-off financial aid—following the qualifying event.

Where / who?

University/scholarship committee.

What to prepare?

Income documents, records of achievements, a medical certificate, or proof of an event, depending on the specific benefit.

What to check?

Each benefit has its own distinct criteria and required documentation.

4. If you need a dormitory place, check application dates, contract rules, fees, and the deposit directly with your university.

When?

During the application period and before moving in.

Where / who?

Student dormitory administration.

What to prepare?

Proof of student status, application, and payment of fees/deposit in accordance with regulations.

What to check?

Admission to the university does not guarantee a place in a student dormitory.

5. If you work while studying, check how the type of contract and your student status affect contributions, tax, and health insurance.

When?

Before starting work and after any change in student status.

Where / who?

Employer/contracting party, ZUS (Social Insurance Institution), and potentially the university.

What to prepare?

Contract, proof of student status, and tax documents.

What to check?

Not every student contract is automatically exempt from social security contributions or tax.
