1. Exchange a recognised-state licence
A valid licence from a recognised state can use the NDLS exchange route. After taking up normal residence in Ireland, you must exchange it or apply for an Irish licence.
When?
EU/EEA licence holders can generally drive while licence remains valid; exchange timing and eligibility depend on issuing country/status.
Where / who?
National Driver Licence Service (NDLS).
What to prepare?
Current foreign licence, identity/PPSN/address/residence evidence and medical/eyesight documents if the NDLS route requires them.
What to check?
NDLS normally-resident criteria include usually living in Ireland for at least 185 days in each calendar year because of personal and occupational ties.
