3. For a child born on or after 10 December 2025, provide the father’s details unless an official exception applies

HSE states that father details normally have to be provided for births from 10 December 2025, with exceptions where there is a compelling safety, protection or legal reason.

4. Check the child’s PPS number and complete the Child Benefit process

Child Benefit is €140 per month for each child in 2026. Follow the automated invitation or claim route that applies after the birth.

5. Register the child for healthcare and the under-8s GP visit card

6. Arrange parental leave, employer notices and any maternity or paternity payments

Check the leave that applies and the related benefit claim. The standard 2026 weekly rate for Maternity, Paternity and Parent’s Benefit is €299, subject to each scheme’s qualifying rules.
