1. Claim widow/widower pension
A widow’s/widower’s pension must be applied for separately. In addition to the death of the insured person, further eligibility requirements apply, for example regarding the marriage/partnership and insurance periods.
If the application is submitted within 6 months of the death, the pension is payable, if the requirements are met, from the day after the death. If the application is submitted later, it generally starts only on the application date; special time limits apply to minors and persons with restricted legal capacity.
Apply to the pension insurance institution responsible for the deceased person; any digital application channels offered by that institution may be used.
Have the civil-status and insurance documents required by the pension insurance institution ready.
Do not confuse this with estate proceedings. A survivor’s pension is a separate benefit and must be applied for.
