1. Claim orphan pension
An orphan’s pension is a benefit for surviving children after the death of a parent who was covered by pension insurance and must be applied for. Requirements apply to the insurance of the deceased parent and to the child’s qualifying status.
The application should be submitted within 6 months of the death so that, if the requirements are met, entitlement can start on the day after the death. If the application is submitted later, the pension is generally payable only from the application date; statutory exceptions are described on the official page.
Apply to the competent pension insurance institution.
Provide the documents required by the pension insurance institution; after the age of 18, in particular provide evidence if the orphan’s pension is to continue because of education or another reason provided for by law.
Special requirements apply to receipt beyond the age of 18. In certain cases, such as proceedings to establish paternity or the appointment of a person with custody, the six-month time limit can be extended.
