3 tasks in suggested order
1. Distinguish between short-term and long-term care benefit because the conditions and care arrangements differ.
At the start of the need for nursing or care.
Social Insurance Agency; depending on the case, the need is confirmed by a doctor or institution.
Details of the cared-for person, reason for care and your insurance status.
Short-term and long-term care benefits have different support periods and, under conditions, carers may alternate for long-term care.

2. Obtain confirmation of the care need for your route: electronically through eHealth, by paper form or by confirmation from the institution.
When the care need arises.
Doctor, school/institution or electronic system depending on the reason.
Insured-person and cared-for-person details; institution details if the facility is closed.
From 1 August 2026 new electronic Social Insurance procedures apply where the care need is confirmed electronically.

3. Submit the care-benefit claim using the procedure for your route and report changes affecting the duration of the benefit.
After the need for nursing/care is confirmed.
Electronic Insured Person Account, Social Insurance branch or by post, depending on the procedure.
Relevant application and confirmation of the care need.
For the same period and case, the benefit cannot be paid to multiple persons outside the rules for long-term care.
