3 tasks in suggested order
1. First determine what kind of help your relative needs: short-term nursing, long-term home care or a social service.
When health or independent functioning changes.
Treating doctor, Labour Office and, depending on the service, municipality/self-governing region.
Medical reports and a description of the help the person needs.
Care benefit from Social Insurance, caregiver allowance and social services are different schemes.

2. If long-term support requires an assessment of dependency or disability, obtain an integrated assessment.
Before applying for a benefit or service that depends on the assessment.
Competent Labour Office.

3. Based on the result, choose the concrete solution: home/care service, residential service, personal assistance or caregiver allowance.
After assessing the need or once the suitable service type is clear.
Municipality, self-governing region, Labour Office or social-service provider depending on the support.
Decision/assessment and documents required by the specific provider.
Availability and fees for social services can differ by municipality, region and provider.
