I have a foreign driving licence and want to use or exchange it in Slovakia
4 tasks in suggested order
1. First determine the regime based on the issuing country and type of foreign driving licence; this determines recognition and whether exchange is possible or required.
Before driving after moving and before applying for an exchange.
Road Traffic Act rules / the competent Police Force department.
Valid foreign driving licence, issuing country and details of your residence in Slovakia.
An EEA licence, a licence from a convention state and another foreign document do not automatically follow the same rules.

2. Check whether your licence is recognised in Slovakia and whether exchange in your case is voluntary, mandatory or not possible without further conditions.
After identifying the issuing country and document type.

The deadline and procedure differ by licence type and issuing country. There is no single universal deadline for all foreign driving licences.

3. If exchange is required or you want to exchange the licence, prepare the original licence, identity/residence document and only the additional documents required for your branch.
Before submitting the application.
The competent Police Force department.
Original driving licence, identity document and residence details; translation or additional confirmations only if required for the specific regime.
An international driving permit alone is not a substitute for a national driving licence for exchange purposes.

4. Submit the exchange application to the Slovak authority competent under the current rules and hand in the foreign licence if the procedure requires it.

The Police Force authority competent for the applicant's place of residence.
