I lost my job – what needs to be done?

1. When your employment contract ends, collect your employment certificate (świadectwo pracy).
The employer should issue the employment certificate on the day the employment relationship ends if they do not intend to employ you again within 7 days. If objective reasons prevent issue on that day, they have 7 days to deliver it.
From your former employer.
You do not need to apply unless you enter into another employment relationship with the same employer within 7 days; in that case, the certificate for the previous period is issued on request.
Check the accuracy of the termination date and the mode of contract termination; these affect your future rights.

2. If you want to obtain unemployed status and use employment-office services, register with the district employment office (powiatowy urząd pracy).
After losing your job; entitlement to unemployment benefit, if it arises, is linked to registration.
The district employment office responsible for your place of residence, or via available online registration.
Identity document, employment certificates, qualification documents, and other required proof.
Registration does not happen automatically upon the termination of the contract.

3. Check whether you qualify for unemployment benefit. The basic condition is at least 365 days of qualifying periods during the 18 months immediately before registration.
At registration with the employment office. The standard benefit period is 180 days, and in situations specified by law it is 365 days.
The district employment office competent for your place of residence.
Documents regarding employment, remuneration, and insurance periods (including foreign ones, if relevant).
Unemployed status and the right to a benefit are two separate determinations.

4. Check continuity of your entitlement to healthcare after employment ends.
After employment ends, entitlement to healthcare generally continues for another 30 days. A person registered as unemployed is registered for health insurance by the employment office if they have no other insurance basis.
Through the employment office, ZUS/NFZ, or another insurance basis, depending on your situation.
Document confirming the end of employment and proof of the new basis for coverage.
An application for a benefit is not always the only way to obtain insurance coverage.

5. If your household income has fallen after losing your job, check family benefits, housing support, and social assistance separately to see what may fit your situation.
After the income change, taking into account the rules for each benefit.
Municipality/Social Welfare Centre (OPS), ZUS, or another appropriate paying authority.
Household income and composition, housing costs, and documents required for the specific benefit.
There is no single automatic package of benefits following job loss.
