1. Determine the purpose of your stay—such as employment, studies, business, or family reunification—and the corresponding permit.

2. Submit the appropriate visa or residence permit application and complete the personal, biometric, and document collection steps.
In the sequence and within the timeframe applicable to the specific legal basis and citizenship.
Diplomatic mission, Enter Hungary, or the competent regional directorate for aliens policing, via the supported channel.
Travel document, photograph/biometrics, and proof of purpose, means of subsistence, accommodation, and health coverage.

3. Register your accommodation in Hungary and ensure any subsequent changes are updated in the aliens policing records.
After moving in or the change occurs, within the deadline applicable to the permit type.

Accommodation provider's declaration, lease or proof of ownership, travel and residence documents.
The address card, accommodation registration, and residence permit are not the same document for every status.

4. Secure the necessary health insurance coverage for the application, then verify the registration for the Social Security ID (TAJ) and insurance upon starting work or establishing another basis for coverage.

5. Before starting work, studies, or a business, check exactly what your permit authorizes and complete any specific notifications required for the activity.
Before commencing the activity.
Employer and immigration authority, educational institution, or business/tax authority (NAV) administration.
Employment contract or offer, proof of admission, or business documents and residence permit.
A residence permit does not necessarily authorize all types of work or forms of business activity.

6. Arrange residence, insurance, and schooling separately for each accompanying family member.
Together with the main application or upon meeting the conditions for family reunification.
Consulate/Immigration Office (OIF), insurance provider, and school or local government.
Travel documents, civil registry documents, and proof of family ties, means of subsistence, and accommodation.
A family member's legal status and right to work are not always identical to those of the person they are joining.
