5 tasks in suggested order
1. Check the vehicle’s country of origin, ownership, foreign documents and whether it requires recognition of foreign approval (honosítás) or another registration procedure.
Prior to taxation, inspection, and registration.
Transport authority / designated inspection station, depending on the vehicle and its country of origin.
Sales invoice/contract, foreign registration document, COC or technical specifications, and customs documents.
For a used vehicle imported from an EEA country or Switzerland, the recognition procedure also checks the foreign registration documents, entitlement to participate in road traffic and technical-compliance information. A vehicle from another origin may require a different procedure.

2. Settle the tax and customs obligations that actually apply to the vehicle, including registration tax where required.
Before the relevant stage of Hungarian vehicle registration.
National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) and, for customs procedures, the competent customs authority.
Vehicle value and technical specifications, proof of ownership, origin, and customs documents.
Registration tax applies to vehicles covered by the law that are placed into circulation in Hungary. For imports and intra-Community acquisitions, the exact tax and VAT treatment depends on the vehicle and the transaction.

3. For Hungarian registration, arrange the required compulsory motor third-party liability insurance.
No later than the point at which proof of compulsory insurance is required for registration.
With an insurer of your choice that offers this insurance in Hungary.
Vehicle and owner/operator details, proof of origin.
A vehicle can be registered only if the compulsory motor third-party liability insurance requirement has been fulfilled.

4. Complete the required recognition (honosítás) or individual technical approval procedure, then start the Hungarian vehicle-registration process.
Before long-term use on Hungarian public roads.
Transport authority / designated inspection station, then a Government Window (Kormányablak).
Foreign documents, proof of ownership, technical certificates, tax and insurance documents.

5. After successful registration, collect the Hungarian registration plates and vehicle documents that are issued.
