4 tasks in suggested order
1. First determine the legal basis on which you fall under the Hungarian health-insurance system, or whether another country’s system applies instead.
When starting work, moving to Hungary or when your insurance status changes.

Having a TAJ number and having current entitlement to healthcare are not the same issue.

2. If a TAJ number is required, use the correct route: a person classed as domestic applies through the health-insurance government office for their residence or place of stay; for an insured foreign employee who is not classed as domestic, the employer requests the TAJ number before work starts from the government office responsible for the employer’s registered office.

Domestic person: health-insurance government office for the residence/place of stay. Insured foreign employee not classed as domestic: the employer requests the TAJ number from the government office responsible for the employer’s registered office; afterwards, the employee or an authorised representative may request/collect the TAJ card at any government office acting in health-insurance matters.

The competent office for TAJ matters depends on the person’s legal status; an insured foreign employee must not automatically be routed according to the employee’s home address.

3. If you already have a TAJ number, check whether your current insurance/entitlement status is in order.
After a status change or if a problem is indicated when receiving care.
