Leave university: career alternatives
4 tasks in suggested order
1. Clarify alternatives and consequences before leaving university
Before dropping out for good, clarify whether the issue is the subject, the university or studying itself. Student and career counselling can compare changing course/university, leave of absence, vocational training or entering work.

2. Once the decision is final: formally deregister from university
You can leave a degree programme at any time, but you should formally deregister according to your university’s procedure. Otherwise enrolment and fees may continue.

3. Update financing, health insurance and residence status
Deregistration can affect BAföG, student health insurance, child benefit and, for international students, residence rights. Inform each affected body and clarify the new status.

4. Choose the next path and start without an unnecessary gap
Possible next steps include vocational training, another degree programme or entering work directly. If you are looking for work, use career counselling and register as a jobseeker in time if required.
