Pause vocational training
4 tasks in suggested order
1. Clarify the reason and speak to the training company and chamber early
A break in vocational training is not an automatic entitlement in every situation. First discuss the reason and expected duration; recognised reasons such as prolonged illness, parental leave or caring duties may allow an official interruption.

2. Choose the right solution: break, extension or part-time training
Depending on the reason, a complete break may not be necessary. An extension of the training period or part-time vocational training may be a better solution with the company and chamber.

3. Agree the interruption in writing and submit evidence
For an official interruption, the Federal Employment Agency states that a written request should go to the training company and competent chamber; depending on the duration, the vocational school should also be involved. Evidence may be required for illness or care.

4. Check pay, examination dates and insurance protection
The consequences depend on the reason and the agreement. A voluntary break may be unpaid, and the end of training, examinations, vocational school and social benefits may also shift.
