Leave vocational training: check alternatives
5 tasks in suggested order
1. Get advice and check alternatives before dropping out
Before terminating for good, check with career counselling, the company or chamber whether changing company or occupation, part-time training or support during training would solve the problem better.

2. End the training contract in writing and on time
For dual training under the Vocational Training Act: during probation it can be terminated at any time without notice. Afterwards, a trainee may generally terminate with four weeks’ notice if giving up or changing occupation; termination must be in writing.

3. Check whether you need to register as seeking work or seeking a training place
For an external vocational training arrangement, the general rule for registering as a jobseeker is: no later than three months before it ends, or within three days if you learn of the end at short notice. This statutory notification duty under Section 38 SGB III does not apply to in-company vocational training arrangements. If you are looking for a new training place, you can register with careers guidance as seeking vocational training.

4. Inform the Family Benefits Office that training has ended
If child benefit is paid for you, the Family Benefits Office must be told about the termination of training. Entitlement may continue depending on what follows, such as new training, study or certain transition/job-seeking periods.

5. Look for a new training place or vocational preparation
Try to move on without a long gap: a new training place, another occupation or, if no place is available yet, counselling, a vocational preparation programme (BvB) or introductory training (EQ).
