1. Register as a jobseeker
Jobseeker registration should be made immediately, no later than three months before employment ends; if notice is shorter, generally within three days.

Registering as a jobseeker does not replace registering as unemployed. Delay can cause financial disadvantages.

2. Register unemployed
To receive unemployment benefit, unemployment registration is required in addition to jobseeker registration according to Federal Employment Agency rules.
At the earliest 3 months beforehand; at the latest on the first day of unemployment.
Agentur für Arbeit online with eID/BundID or in person.
For in-person registration, identity card or passport plus Meldebescheinigung; further information for the benefit application.
Benefits can generally start only from the day of unemployment registration. After a longer interruption, a new registration may be required.

3. Apply for unemployment benefit
If applicable: If you intend to claim unemployment benefit and meet the conditions.
The Federal Employment Agency provides the official eligibility rules, application routes and evidence requirements for unemployment benefit.
Prepare the registration and application so that unemployment registration is completed no later than the first day of unemployment.
