2 tasks in suggested order
1. Check care needs and care allowance
Check whether the person needing care already receives care allowance or whether an application/increase due to greater care needs is appropriate.
As soon as regular care is needed or care needs increase substantially.
With the competent insurance institution under the official care allowance rules.
Medical documents and information on actual care needs; further evidence if requested.
The level is based on assessed care needs; do not assume a care level yourself.

2. Check care leave, part-time care leave or other time off
If applicable: If the care situation affects your employment.
If you interrupt or reduce your work to care for a close relative, check whether care leave or care part-time work and an entitlement to care leave allowance are available to you.
Agree or claim care leave/care part-time work in advance with your employer in accordance with the statutory rules. For care leave allowance, the timing of the application is particularly important.
Care leave/care part-time work with the employer; care leave allowance through the competent body using the official application channels.
Evidence of relationship, care allowance/care needs and documents required for the chosen measure.
If care leave allowance is applied for within 2 months of the start of the measure, it can be granted from the start. If the application is made later but before the end of the measure, it generally starts only from the application date; applications submitted after the measure has ended are generally rejected as late. Special rules described on the official page apply in cases involving a statutory entitlement.
