I sold a car – what needs to be done?
3 tasks in suggested order
1. Document the sale and handover so it is clear who takes the vehicle, in what condition and with which documents.
At sale and handover.
Between seller and buyer; keep the contract.
Seller/buyer details, vehicle data, sale contract and documents/keys being handed over.
The sale contract itself does not replace the change in the vehicle register.

2. Complete the change of holder/owner in the vehicle register under the current procedure and agreement with the buyer.
After the sale under the statutory holder-change procedure.
Vehicle-registration office or electronic service where available.
Vehicle documents, buyer details and, depending on filing method, consent/authorisation.
Do not follow outdated two-step “deregister then register” instructions without checking the current holder-change procedure.

3. After the transfer is completed, notify the insurer and settle compulsory or other vehicle insurance under the policy terms.
After the holder/owner changes or as required by the insurance contract.
Your insurer.
Evidence of transfer/registered change and policy details.
Do not cancel compulsory insurance solely on an oral agreement with the buyer; provide the insurer with evidence of the event affecting the policy.
