1. Apply for widow’s/widower’s pension
A survivor’s pension is not paid automatically and must be applied for with Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
When?
As soon as possible after the death. If claimed more than 12 months after the date of death, survivor’s pension is generally paid retroactively for no more than 12 months.
Where / who?
Deutsche Rentenversicherung; electronic application is also possible.
What to prepare?
In particular death certificate, marriage/civil-partnership certificate, income information and other pension documents requested by DRV.
What to check?
If the deceased was already receiving a pension, an advance-payment procedure for the death quarter may also be relevant.
