1. Cross-border commuters: clarify health insurance and the right of option within the deadline
Anyone who lives abroad and works in Switzerland is generally subject to compulsory health insurance in Switzerland. However, certain countries of residence and groups of people have a right of option.
As a rule, within 3 months from the start of employment or the start of the insurance obligation.
With the competent authority in the canton of employment; if taking Swiss insurance, also with an authorised health insurer.
Proof of employment, residence details and – if you wish to exercise the right of option – the evidence of insurance in the country of residence required by the cantonal authority.
The right of option is not exercised automatically merely by having insurance in the country of residence. Anyone wishing to be exempted from the Swiss insurance obligation must complete the prescribed procedure with the canton of employment within the deadline.
