1. Lost or stolen passport
Different reporting procedures apply to loss and theft. A passport lost in Austria must be reported to the passport authority; in the event of theft, a theft report must be made to the police without delay.
Report a loss to the passport authority; report theft to the police without delay. If the passport is found again, also notify the passport authority promptly.
In Austria: passport authority; in the event of theft, also the police. Abroad, in the event of theft first contact the local police and then the Austrian representation for an emergency passport for the return journey.
For a replacement, provide the identity and application documents required for the specific case; in the event of theft, the required police theft report.
A passport that was previously reported lost or stolen and is later found should not simply be used for travel. The recovery must be reported; some countries may also refuse a document once reported lost/stolen even after the alert has been withdrawn.
