1. Give the required Shared Parental Leave/Pay notices to your employer in Great Britain

If applicable: If your employment is governed by Great Britain Shared Parental Leave rules.

In England, Scotland and Wales, eligible parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of pay in the child’s first year, after maternity/adoption leave or pay is reduced. You must give the employer the required entitlement/curtailment information and at least 8 weeks’ written notice of leave dates.

When?

At least 8 weeks before each planned block of Shared Parental Leave, subject to the official curtailment/eligibility notice rules.

Where / who?

Your employer, using the employer’s forms or the official/Acas notice templates where appropriate.

What to prepare?

Partner/employer details, maternity/adoption leave/pay end date, child birth/placement information, eligibility declarations and requested leave blocks.

What to check?

Eligibility and notice information must be complete. Northern Ireland has its own statutory route and forms/rules, covered separately.

2. Give the Northern Ireland Shared Parental Leave/Pay notices to your employer

If applicable: If your employment is governed by Northern Ireland law.

Northern Ireland has its own Shared Parental Leave and Pay employment-law route. Eligible parents reduce maternity/adoption leave/pay and give the employer the required written entitlement and leave notices.

When?

Give at least 8 weeks’ notice before a block of Shared Parental Leave, following the NI starting/curtailment rules.

Where / who?

Your employer in Northern Ireland, using the relevant NI forms/notice information.

What to prepare?

Partner details, maternity/adoption leave/pay end date, child birth/placement information, eligibility declarations and planned leave blocks.

What to check?

Do not assume later Great Britain paternity/parental-leave reforms automatically changed Northern Ireland employment law. Use the current nidirect rules.
