5 tasks in suggested order
1. From age 66, check your State Pension options and request your PRSI Contribution Statement
State Pension (Contributory) is available from age 66. People born on or after 1 January 1958 can choose a claim start date between ages 66 and 70.

3. Compare State Pension (Contributory) and means-tested State Pension (Non-contributory)
State Pension (Contributory) depends on the PRSI record and is not means tested. State Pension (Non-contributory) is means tested and has residence conditions. If you qualify for both, DSP awards the higher payment.

4. Apply for State Pension no more than 6 months before your chosen start date
For State Pension (Contributory), the 2026 maximum personal weekly rate at age 66 is €299.30. If born on or after 1 January 1958, deferring to a date between 67 and 70 may produce an actuarially increased rate, subject to your contribution record.
