2. Compare Carer’s Benefit with means-tested Carer’s Allowance before applying

Carer’s Benefit is PRSI-based; Carer’s Allowance is means-tested. In 2026 the maximum Carer’s Allowance rate is €270 a week if the carer is under 66 and €308 if aged 66 or over.

3. Apply for the carer payment that fits your circumstances and provide the required care, work and financial evidence

For Carer’s Allowance, full-time care conditions and a means test apply; work, self-employment, voluntary work, training and education combined must not exceed 18.5 hours a week. For Carer’s Benefit, PRSI conditions also apply.

4. Check the €2,000 Carer’s Support Grant, respite services and other household entitlements

The Carer’s Support Grant is €2,000 in 2026. Check the separate qualifying rules and other supports that may apply to the household.
