1. Apply for Grundsicherungsgeld
If applicable: If you need means-tested support after unemployment benefit ends and meet the conditions.
Since 1 July 2026, Grundsicherungsgeld has replaced Bürgergeld; applications can be made online through the Jobcenter, among other routes.
Grundsicherungsgeld has applied since 1.7.2026. Apply as soon as financial need exists or is foreseeable.
Competent Jobcenter; existing Bürgergeld online services/forms continue to be used during the transition period.
Typically required are proof of identity, bank statements, income evidence, rent/heating-cost evidence and other case-specific documents.
Since 1.7.2026, the benefit is called Grundsicherungsgeld/Grundsicherung für Arbeitsuchende; older forms may temporarily still use the term “Bürgergeld”.
